Two Additions to the Illinois Constitution That Could Expand Your Outlook on Life

The Preamble of the Constitution for the State of Illinois is a unique document. In 1970 some profound things were added to the Preamble that really gave me hope for the future. Specifically, stating the intent of this government is to eliminate poverty. I read this for the first time as a kid, and it always struck me as a noble goal, and a goal that could be achieved.

Inequality is as dangerous to the health of our democracy as poverty. The Illinois Constitution makes sure to point out that without hesitation right from the start. If we are not all treated as equal citizens we will never be able to achieve a just and peaceful existence as a State, or as fully developed individuals.

Here is the “new” 1970 addition to the Preamble:

“[P]rovide for the health, safety and welfare of the people; maintain a representative and orderly government; eliminate poverty and inequality; assure legal, social and economic justice; provide opportunity for the fullest development of the individual. …”
